A plant called Wood N Tapping is being considered for the demolition of a wood-processing plant near North Carolina’s border with Georgia.
The plant is considered one of the most deadly plants in the country, responsible for killing at least nine people since 2004.
Wood N Taping is one of at least 17 plant proposals for demolition in the United States.
The site, which was once a lumber mill, has been an area of concern for locals for years, especially because it was located on land the federal government acquired in 1862.
In December, federal officials decided to take a look at the plant, which they had spent decades trying to protect.
The company behind the plant had received a $4.5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture in 2014.
The federal government gave the company a $3.7 million grant in 2017.
In an email to the newspaper, a Wood N N Tap spokesperson told the paper the company “has always been committed to a safe and secure environment for the safety of the workers and customers.”
